“who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:5
I can remember when I started this new life plan in April of this year. Results seemed so removed and far from the daily reality. Instead I felt deprived, had headaches from sugar withdrawal and thought I was starving. The first two weeks were brutal. I’ve come to believe it was a mix of my cranky attitude about saying goodbye to the foods I loved, mixed with true withdrawal symptoms. But it soon passed and before long the exhilaration of making it through another day kept me going one day, one prayer, one choice at a time.
As a breast cancer patient the recommendation was to lose my excess weight. The weight didn’t fly off, it’s been slow. I’m fine with that because it was steady and over the past 5 months those small losses have all added up to a significant difference. And though, like any woman, I like the benefit of losing inches and weight, what I really am the most excited about is the way it has changed my health. I have renewed energy, better focus and am sleeping better. I have no desire to go back to my old carb loaded sugar filled life. I feel too good to want to go back. That doesn’t mean I don’t have a taste here and there, because I do. But, for the most part I’m sugar and processed food free. However I’ve given myself the 4 bite rule on special occasions and that seems to work for me. The key is, every day is not a special eating occasion!
Tonight I got a message from a dear friend, Dee. I saw her in the summer when I was traveling through her city. I shared my enthusiasm with my new way of eating and it sparked a fire in her too. Dee has Lupus and many other health issues. Her health issues have been a source of discouragement. Look at the message I got from here tonight :
I wanted to let you now I’m 63 days free from sugar, gluten and dairy! I had blood tests done and I just had to share some good news…my liver function enzymes were normal and my triglycerides dropped 200 points! They are now only 90; well under the recommendation of being under 150! My overall cholesterol dropped 80 points! No statins, just clean eating! I just had to share this good news with you because you are the catalyst the LORD used to inspire me towards better health. I love you!
Hearing these results thrills my heart! Like me, Dee is a friend who I know has loved her sugary treats. Now she is 63 days into a whole new life. I’m proud of her and thrilled for her!
My medical tests at 90 days were significantly different too. But the most exciting thing is that when you stay away from sugar and artificial sweeteners for a time, you actually lose your cravings and desires for them. Yes, it’s true. Without the cravings, it becomes easier, actually enjoyable to eat healthy foods. I still sweeten some things and use Stevia or honey, neither seem to make the cravings kick in.
I’m praying for you all during this 30 days. I know that with the strength of Christ we can deny ourselves and move towards better health!
