“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy;
they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” Marcel Proust
Before we devour our Thanksgiving meal, we usually take a few minutes to go around the room and share what we are thankful for. You know what the number 1 answer is? Family. People whom we love People who love us back. Whether they are the family we are born into, or married into, or adopted into or non-related friends we make our family, these people are true gifts to us.
But go beyond that intimate circle and who do you find? Look towards the others in your life you are in contact with on a daily basis. The teachers at your kid’s school, bosses and co-workers you do your 9 to 5 with, neighbors you wave to when you get your mail. How are you thankful for them?
Now go beyond them, to the people you see often but may not know their names…the bag boy who wheels your groceries to the car, the barista who gets that PSL just right, the one collecting the dirty towels at the gym. You breeze by them regularly but have you thought about being grateful they are in your life? “Whenever you enjoy a small pleasure, contemplate what life would be like without it…Reflecting on how life would be different without even the most minor pleasure fosters instant feelings of gratitude.” Robert A. Emmons, Gratitude Works!
So count people today. And if you are so moved, transfer your thanks from the paper to your voice and tell them (before Thanksgiving even!) how you are thankful for them.
