“How God thinks of us is not only more important, but infinitely more important.” CS Lewis
So we just spent some time thinking and admiring our God-made bodies. How did that go for you? Were you tempted to be critical? Come on, be honest! It’s so easy to go down that road of judgement in how our bodies look. Our eyes shift side to side in comparison with the more in shape, younger, healthier and ‘prettier’ bodies. Heavy sigh. I do too. And it’s not just our bodies we may feel inferior about, but its also our abilities and our personalities that get put on the comparison block. We moan, “I’m not talented enough!” “I’m not smart enough!” “I’m not winsome enough!” But what if we chose to believe what God believes about us? What if we turned from the world and focused on what our Creator thinks of us? This is what He whispers to us, “You are my precious child, holy and dearly loved. You are my workmanship. I knit you together perfectly and my thoughts turn to you so often. I chose you as my own before the foundations of the world. When I made you I declared it “very good”. Zephaniah describes what God thinks of us….
” ‘He will rejoice over you with great gladness; He will love you and not accuse you.’ Is that a joyous choir I hear? No, it is the Lord himself exulting over you in a happy song.” Zephaniah 3:17 The Living Bible.
How many times do I need to hear that? When can I release the grip of doubt and comaparison and just be grateful that I’m enough…for Him? What if we could come to a place of gratefulness and thankfulness in who God made us? What if we could be joyful as God is joyful over us? If God can muster it, can’t we? Think of all the stressful time and energy we put into being ungrateful about who we are. Every time we look in the mirror, wishing we looked different. All the time spent comparing ourselves to the ‘beautiful, talented’ people. Go back to your Maker. See Him as singing over you.
“The only thing to rip out the tape echoing of self-rejection is the song of His serenade.” Ann Voscamp.
