These pasts few weeks I have been focusing on Giving In to God rather than just Giving Up something as a seasonal ritual during lent. In the last post I was processing the language of Giving In, which can be summed up with one unpopular and seemingly old fashion word: repent. Repent is a word rich with meaning and captures what lent is really about, preparing our lives to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We celebrate Christ by living a life of continually turning from self and returning to Him over and over again.
This week let’s talk about the mind of Giving In, a mind that is focused, not forgetting the benefits of God’s love and grace.
It’s easy to forget things. We live busy lives and are multi-tasking daily. But when it comes to who God is, and His love and care for us, forgetting will produce a loss of hope, in lives that hold disappointments. We must pay attention, daily, to what the truth is about the God we put our trust in. We can talk about faith in God, but the rubber meets the road when life is hard and we lose the flashlight of faith.
Paying Attention, is a spiritual discipline of the mind. In this season of my own life, God has been calling me to Pay Attention. When I pay attention to things like his love for me, the truths in His word, and the simplicity of the Scriptures, I live differently. While paying attention I have hope, courage, and the ability to face the bitter things in life. In other words, when paying attention, I find my way.
But, when I don’t pay attention, I get lost. I get lost in self, in fear, in insecurity. While lost, I try harder to find my way, but all my efforts produce a life that is less about finding Jesus and more about securing my place.
Praise the Lord, O My Soul; all my inmost being praise His holy name. Praise the Lord, O My Soul, and forget not all his benefits–
- who forgives all your sins
- who heals all your diseases
- who redeems your life from the pit
- who crowns you with love and compassion
- who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles.
What happens when we remember and pay attention? We live in the beauty of grace and the promise of love. We remember he is our redeemer, paying the price, the purchase price for our life. This purchase, as celebrated at Easter, bought our place in eternity. Yet, in the middle of real life now, God crowns us with love, he showers us with compassion and satisfies our desires with all that would be good for us.
When I forget? That’s a different story. I get lost, frustrated, make many u-turns, consult the mapquest of life over and over again….never really finding the way. All because I was too busy to pay attention to WHO HE promised to be.
Today I celebrate. Today I look around and remember. Today I am focused on Paying Attention to God in everything. Today I am Giving In to Truth…the Truth of His love and compassion towards me, a broken easily distracted woman. Today I celebrate that He redeems me from the pits I find myself in. Jesus is enough and I repent for the times I lived like He wasn’t and now pay attention to the truth that He Is.
This is a life of Giving In….to God.
