Today is August 28th! Why is that significant? Because it’s 828…
My mentor, Jinny, used to call me on this day to tell me it was 828. I admit thinking at the time that she was a little ” over the top” about this particular promise in Scripture. But over the years I have realized that God wanted her to plant the seed of this promise into my heart. She did plant this little verse in my life in many ways over the years of our sweet friendship. The promise has made a huge difference in the way I view circumstances in my life.
Jinny is with Jesus now but I remember well her encouragement to believe:
“God is working all things for the good for those who love God and are called according to His purposes.” Romans 8:28
That is ALL things, not just the bright and beautiful but the ugly and hideous things. All things, not the accomplishments and the awards but the shameful things we wish we could turn back and change. ALL things, the good, bad and ugly…ALL. This promise when believed truly changes our attitude about the things we go through. We must train ourselves to remember and hold on to the truth. I even have it on my license plate as cheesy as that might sound.
As with all Scripture we must hold on to promises in context of the entirety of what was being said at the time. In context the next verse tells us that the reason things are working for the good is because in the middle of it all, God is changing us, conforming us into the image of his Son. All things are working a work of change in our lives! So in the grip of the hard stuff, God is changing us. He is creating in us something that can only happen through whatever it is we are walking through. That is the real beauty of the promise so maybe 829 is even better!
“For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his son…” Romans 8:29
Finally, keeping it in context and keeping it real, this chapter of Romans concludes with this:
“What shall we say then in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?” “What shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship?” ” No, in ALL these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” ” Nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:31,35, 37, 39
I have had my share of the bad and the ugly and I have had the blessing of much good. I have had people against me, life circumstances stacked against me and times when I was certainly not a conqueror but a depressed stuck woman. Through it all I remembered my mentor Jinny, holding on to this promise with everything that was within her. She had the victory when she reminded herself of the truth. I will always love her for making this impression of Scripture on my life. Do you have a mentor? Remember to thank them for the impact they had on your life. More importantly, remember to thank God for his promise to care for you through ALL things. Remember this promise when you are in between…sandwiched in the between the good and the hard. God is with you even there!
And, don’t forget No Thing…..Nothing, No Thing, will be able to take you away from God’s love for you in Christ…Nothing! All things are not good in and of themselves, but God is at work in everything.
What are some of your ALL Things that looked bad but worked for good?
