“So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit.” Galatians 6:9
Encouraged and reminded are the two things I need. It’s not enough for me to hang in there, I have to be reminded that even the things that irritate me are worth the bother when they are what God is leading me to do.
This morning as I finished my coffee a heart painted at the bottom of the cup gave me pause. I had seen this heart before, but this particular morning it spoke to me, reminding me that in the end, in all things, God is always working on my heart. It’s easy to lose sight of that, isn’t it? Life seems to be about the circumstances not my heart.
Often things happen leaving us throwing our hands in the air in frustration with a sigh that often reflects, Why should I bother! When life is frustrating, relationships confusing and our schedule demanding, it’s easy to give up on whatever it is we were trusting God with.
Just the other day a friend was sharing with me how it took her over a year to finally get over an offense, only to get hurt again. She was broken-hearted and frustrated. How could God allow me to trust him, lean into forgiveness and then be slammed again with the same type of hurt? She wondered why she should bother trusting God when things just don’t turn out the way she would hope anyway…
I get it.
I also think I get why we need to keep bothering, keep caring and keep pressing forward. Because when we don’t, we open up a way for the enemy to get us where it counts, our relationship with God. You see for the praying Christian, the disappointment of being hurt again turns our attention to God. Why did he allow me to be hurt again? Why do I keep trying to trust and keep getting let down? On and on, you know the questions because you have probably had them.
What seems like too much trouble today? What situation or relationship is frustrating you? Could it be that God is using the current state of things to get to you at heart level? I hope today you will be reminded and encouraged by the words of Paul to the Galatians….don’t grow weary…don’t allow yourself to give up….don’t give in to not caring.
We bother because everything counts. Every moment has purpose. Every act has an outcome. We bother because we belong to Christ, and as His, He is living in us, loving through us. That, my friend, is why we bother.
